As her blog name suggests, Betsy Berger is a true RazorBlonde What does that mean? Well, her style has a bit of an edge. After interviewing this Canadian Native, turned Californian, turned Canadian again, I realized that she really wants to throw on a pair of ripped jeans, a spiked wristband and become a rebellious designer. Of course, life has taken her down a different path, so she lives her creative fashion life vicariously through her blog. That’s one of the great things about fashion blogging, you can daydream and imagine being a super star, in charge of your very own runway show.

The coolest part about RazorBlonde is the collage of images varying from the super sweet to those with a more hardcore , punk rock edge. I would imagine this is alot like Betsy herself. I must say, her blog has a very crisp presentation and her logo is simple yet striking. Here is what Betsy had to say.

razorblonde.com

Razor Blonde is a super cool name? What does it mean?

Well, it came about after my husband mockingly called me Razor Blonde after seeing a pair of razorblade glasses I wanted. It just kind of stuck. It describes a style with a bit of an edge to it.

From Political Science major to a fashion blogger? How did that happen?

I debated taking fashion marketing versus political science for a long time. Somehow I ended up in Political Science, and, though it was fun and international relations does really interest me, it’s never had the same pull as fashion or styling has had on me. So, after finishing my degree, I focused on what I wanted.

Do you have a job to support you or do you somehow make money by blogging?

I do have a job. I’m the social media coordinator for a company here in Toronto. I really enjoy it, as it mixes my love for the internet into a lot of other facets. It’s definitely hard to make money blogging unless you treat it as your full time job. I, clearly, don’t have that figured out, but who knows right?

I noticed that Nokia invited you test a new phone? How did you get that gig? Tell me about that experience.

IT was really rad! They contacted me out of nowhere, apparently just searching for bloggers in Toronto. They were on a tour with their new smart phone so I got to use it at a local fashion event and then I got to keep it. It’s defiantly the most useful thing I’ve ever gotten from blogging… free phone, free service!

razor-blonde

So you moved from California , back to your native Canada. Do you miss California at? What would you say is the biggest difference between the two?

I like being back in Canada, as sometimes, it’s just a matter of feeling at home. I like being closer to my family and friends, and I love Toronto. I do, however, really, really miss California. The biggest differences between the two are the things I miss the most about California: I miss the weather, I miss the culture, I miss the style, I miss the sales, the clothing selection. Canada is full of people that are relatively practical. Let’s be honest, that’s never been my forte – ah well, maybe we’ll end up going back!

I noticed you have a lookbook.nu profile, does that help increase readers to your fashion blog? What do you think about these photo sharing sites, especially for younger girls posting pics of themselves?

I find that Lookbook.nu drives a lot of traffic to my site. It’s my top referral. However, you have to be sensible in your picture posting. Lookbook.nu is pretty good at censoring and weeding out the pictures that shouldn’t be on there to begin with. I would rather have 13 year olds looking at Lookbook.nu for inspiration and an identity than at My Space, Facebook, or Miley Cyrus.

Your fashion photos and articles are very sexy and appealing. You have a great eye for editorial imagery. What resources do you rely on to find new ?

I go through a ton of blogs, layouts, magazines – you name it. I’m constantly looking for inspiration. FashionGoneRogue.com is a personal favorite, and also StuddedHearts.blogspot.com – these two always have the best stuff from which to draw ideas and styling ideas.

razor-blonde-blog

Who is your favorite model of the moment?

Abbey Lee Kershaw is the most stunning creature- I love her vibe, her style – I think she’s wonderful. Crush much?

Do you plan to be more involved in the fashion side of blogging one day? Like becoming a model or designer.

Model or designer, probably not. I would love to collaborate, but I think styling, writing, or doing social media for a designer or magazine is where I’m headed.

How much time do you spend researching, marketing, writing, networking and designing your blog per week?

Not enough. I used to spend a lot of time, almost 2 or 3 hours a day. Now, with a full time job, I try to fit it in when I can. I’m hoping to get back to it when I’m more settled and organized.

betsy berger

What is the best advice you can give to a young blogger hoping to one day have a well recognized blog such as yours?
Just do what you want, do what you love. You shouldn’t be trying to prove something or gain something. It should be a creative outlet, not an attention seeker.

If you were granted one wish , but the wish had to be related to fashion in some way, what would that wish be?

To be able to go to every fashion week, in every major city, around the world. For free, and with a different outfit for every day. Pretty basic, right?

The site I chose to review and feature for this week is called She- Style through Her Eyes. It first caught my eye when Jen registered as a member of our Fashion Blog community and began posting links to her site. I found many of her articles to be inspirational and her photos fresh!

Little did I know there were three bloggers who had connected to create this blog and not only did they have one blog but they also have a SHE-tumblr blog and a personal blog Sprinkled Dreams. Talk about being a dedicated blogger. Wow.

Oh yea, Jen is also a youth leader at her church, as if being a full time blogger and social networker wasnt enough. haha! Here is their story.

Style through her eyes

So, how did you get into Blogging about Fashion?

I have always loved fashion and became greatly inspired to start up my own blog after watching Julie & Julia. It’s a movie centered around cooking and recipes but you really have to watch it to understand where the inspiration came from. I’d hate to spoil the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it.

Since I’ve started fashion blogging I have learned so much and have been introduced to so many new and exciting things. I love everything about it!

How long have you been blogging 1) In general 2) About fashion?

SHE (Style through Her Eyes) has only been online for a little over half a year. I had been on Live Journal (which I consider to be very similar to blogging) since 2004, so when I started actually blogging in January of 2010 the experience from Live Journal and other projects really helped.

I started my own personal blog maybe about two months ago.

How did you meet the other two co-authors of your blogs?

Casee and I met in 2003. She stumbled upon my web domain and says “She was one of my biggest inspirations to pursue graphic design, I would check the website daily to see if she had a new layout!” Casee eventually started her own website and then we connected more through Live Journal. I knew she’d jump right on board with the idea of a fashion blog as we have a lot of similar interests.

Karen and I also met around the same time in sort of the same way. She found my Lord of the Rings fan site and from there found a link to my Live Journal. She says “I think the most recent post on her LJ was about LOST or something else that was relevant to my interests.”

They are both great friends and write amazing posts for SHE! I’m so blessed to be able to work with them.

Style through her eyes

Do you blog as a hobby or a career? Do you have a full time job doing something else?

Right now I blog as a hobby. I am also a volunteer Youth Leader at my church where I work with teens in both Jr. High and High school. I’m also currently looking for a part-time job, but I will continue fashion blogging and working with the teens as those are my greatest passions in life.

Why do you have 2 blogs?

One of them is obviously purely dedicated to all aspects of fashion, while the other is a personal blog. I think it’s nice to have a personal space where I can post various things from movie reviews, picture spams, quotes, etc.

Your blogs are inspirational by nature, but also fashionable. Would you consider yourself more of a lifestyle blogger or a fashion blogger?

Our Tumblr is a mix of the two, but I think overall I would consider myself a Fashion Blogger.

What audience do you hope reads your blogs?

Since I work with teens I think it’d be really cool if a lot of younger females read our blog. I would love for us to inspire and encourage them. With that said, I think it’s safe to say that we at SHE hope females of all ages around the world read our blog and enjoy it!

I would consider your Tumblr Blog to be a Reblog, many people may or may not consider that to be a true fashion blogger? What are your thoughts?

Jen’s Answer: Only in the last month or so have we been reblogging more often. We have a lot to manage so sometimes it’s easier to reblog, but we pick and choose carefully! It is extremely important to us that our viewers know that our Tumblr is NOT our actual blog. It’s just a fun place for everyone to find fascinating pictures, links and quotes.

Casee’s Answer: We definitely don’t profess that our Tumblr is a fashion blog on its own. I think we like to consider it as an extension of the content you would find on SHE. I don’t really understand why people consider reblogging to be in some way a lesser form of blogging on Tumblr, though. People use Tumblr for very different purposes and the purpose of our account is to gather content that we think coincides with what we represent on SHE. I don’t think the methods we use to gather our content is particularly relevant, as long as credit is always given. If we were using Tumblr as the platform for our actual blog then I could understand the significance, but that’s not the case.

How do you find so many different photos to reblog?

We do a lot of searching on Tumblr and We Heart It and we also follow others who post things that we think our viewers will also like.

What has been the best way to attract readers to your site?

Jen’s Answer: Networking on places like Facebook, Delance Fashion, Independent Fashion Bloggers, etc. It’s also great to follow other bloggers and connect with them.

Casee’s Answer: Facebook is especially helpful for attracting readers because, obviously, it’s immensely popular and the majority of its users are inclined to “Like” a page that one of their friends “Likes”. You can also reach people who may not read or know about fashion blogs.

Style through her eyes

How much time do you spend on Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, amd Lookbook.nu?

A lot! Not only do I have my own personal accounts, but I have SHE listed on many of them. I also have other websites and projects that I use them for as well. It’s an every day thing, that’s for sure. I think most people would probably think it’s ridiculous.

What are your thoughts about photo sharing sites like lookbook.nu?

Jen’s Answer: I think they are great for networking and for viewers to get to know each person and their individual style.

Casee’s Answer: I think it’s important for the sites to be used with a great deal of respect. It’s easy for the self-esteem of users – young women, especially – to be influenced if too much attention is put on the ratings and popularity of themselves or others. No one should consider themselves privileged or more entitled to use the site just because their look has more “Hypes”, etc.

How important do you think blogs are to the fashion business now and ultimately in the future?

Jen’s Answer: I think ultimately they can learn a lot from fashion bloggers. There are some that are unbelievably popular. People love what these bloggers are posting and that can be hugely beneficial to large companies in ways that will help them to discover what society is after when it comes to fashion.

Casee’s Answer: I think fashion bloggers are very aware that they represent not only their own opinions, but also the opinions of their readers. What they have to communicate with the fashion businesses definitely deserves to be acknowledged because bloggers have a big hand in helping those businesses promote their products. Fashion bloggers can be trendsetters, and that’s something to pay attention to.

What is your ultimate goal as a blogger?

We (Casee, Karen and myself) strive to have something for everyone while staying true to ourselves as far as our own personal style and tastes go. Our goal for SHE is to reach females all around the world and give them hope through style by representing only the most marvelous and modest. We also want to encourage our viewers in helping them feel beautiful, confident and loved.

Style through her eyes

What advice can you give to young fashion bloggers with a new blog or thinking of starting a fashion blog?

Jen’s Answer: The most important thing is to be yourself! Don’t be afraid to post about the things you like. I would also greatly encourage new bloggers to network like crazy! It’ll take time but it’s truly worth it! Every week SHE continues to grow and it’s such an exciting thing for all of us to experience.

Casee’s Answer: It’s also important to maintain a healthy focus about your blog. Posting the things you find interesting, the things you’re passionate about, that’s key. People don’t want to read a half-hearted blog. Updating frequently is beneficial, but you should always post because you want to, not because you have to. Don’t thrive on gaining followers and definitely don’t let that affect what you post. Before you can focus on becoming a Big, Shiny, Popular Blog you should establish your identity in the “blogosphere”. It’s not good to feel dictated to by what the other, more popular blogs post and no one will want to read something that looks and sounds like everyone else!

If you could make one wish right now and that wish could come true, what would that wish be?

I think I would wish that everyone would come to know the Lord so that they could experience the greatest love of all and never have to fear about dying again.

What fashion retailer do you think deserves an award? What fashion retailer needs to go away?

Jen’s Answer: If Target, Forever 21, and H&M count than those would be the places I think deserve awards. Target especially has expanded their clothing and accessory line over the years and has become so much more popular amongst teens and women. I feel they have really blossomed, and they carry such well-made clothing. Forever 21 has amazing prices, as Target does, and has also expanded as far as sizes and exciting new lines go. I think it’s so amazing to see Forever 21 becoming a place for everyone, even mothers-to-be! H&M has their higher prices at times, but they have a huge selection of great prices that are similar to Forever 21’s. I also love that they have something for the entire family.

As far as the ones that need to go away, I’d say places like Papaya. I haven’t been in that place for a long time but I often felt like there were just a lot of cheap items and I know their clothes also don’t always last that long. I also am not a fan of the places that over-charge when their clothes aren’t even designer brands in the first place.

Casee’s Answer: Stores like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx can be excellent resources for building a functional, enduring wardrobe. They don’t necessarily offer luxe shopping experiences like other retailers, but they offer great prices on quality designer clothes and accessories. I also love Coldwater Creek and White House | Black Market because they manage to offer fabulous atmosphere and quality pieces without breaking your budget. As far as the stores I’d like to see go away, I think Banana Republic is a disappointment as a fashion line and retailer. Customers pay designer prices for clothing that literally falls apart after one wash. There are other retailers that follow the one-wear mantra such as Charlotte Russe and Maurice’s who offer next to no quality at inexpensive prices. Those stores both cater to teens and young women, who buy things cheap and wear them for a season before they ultimately end up in the garbage, unsalvageable. I think it’s important for retailers to educate their young clientele on the importance of quality and to give them sustainable pieces with which they can establish a true wardrobe.

Describe your personal style?

While my style is usually quite feminine I have a range of different types of clothing. I don’t wear just one specific style. Changing things up is always fun!

If you had $1000 to spend on Fashion stuff right now, what would you buy?
I would spend a lot of it at Forever 21, Target, H&M and Urban Outfitters. I’d stock up on Urban Decay make-up products because I have a huge obsession for that brand. Something Miu Miu would be nice, and perhaps a designer bag. It would be so exciting to purchase something hand-made by one of the bloggers I follow like Keiko Lynn. I’d also love to have a very bold designer dress, not that I would have anything to wear it to, but it’d be lovely. Basically, I would have no problem spending it all on fashion. This could very well be the longest answer if I continued, so I won’t bore you

Thanks so much for interviewing us! We’re sorry Karen couldn’t answer any questions, she is away in London at the moment!

Australia seems to be rockin some sassy style nowadays. It seems the more and more I research for a great fashion blog, I always seem to stumble upon an Australian fashion blogger. It could be that I am a California native and Australian bloggers have the same casual, laid back style as us native Southern Californians. Whatever the reason may be, I have come to the conclusion that the freshest fashion is currently coming from Australia.

In my research I found a super stylish “Online glossy” created by Krista Eppelstun, called MyLookBook. Krista has created a magazine with pages that flip and fold just like a regular magazine. She has up to the minute editorials and fashion blogger spotlights. This online fashion magazine is free to read, because Krista gets paid by Fashion sponsors and advertisers.

As if it wasn’t enough to tackle the challenge of running an operating a monthly online magazine all by herself, Krista also writes a blog. Her fashion blog Fashion Lookbook has fresh articles and sexy images posted every couple days. I honestly don’t know how this girl has enough time in the day to manage two beautiful fashion domains. That’s why I had to get a hold of Krista herself and ask her a few questions myself. Here is what she had to say.

Thanks Krista for being kind enough to answer my questions and join our fast growing fashion blogger community.

Australia seems to have a lot of successful fashion blogs, who are your favorite Australian fashion bloggers?
I’m always discovering new ones however my absolute favourites right now are:
Gary Pepper vintage
Bond I Bespoke
SassiSam
They All Hate us
Style Me Romy

How long have you been blogging and What made you decide to start a fashion blog?
I’ve been blogging since 2007. I run online fashion magazine MyLookBook however I find blogging to be a much more personal expression of how I feel about fashion. When I update my blog I feel un-restricted and free to talk about anything that’s inspiring me at exactly that moment.

Is your blog a full time career or do you have another job to support the habit?
Between the Mylookbook Magazine and my blog I have been able to create a full time career from it. I absolutely love what I do and feel privileged that I’ve been able to create a job from doing something so enjoyable.

How much time do you spend planning your articles, researching trends and ideas? Do you ever run out of ideas?
Recently I actually started to keep track of the hours that I do spend blogging and working on mylookbook and it would definitely add up to at least 40 hours per week. That included research, writing and doing the artwork. I actually feel inspired most of the time however on the rare occasion I do run out of ideas I find that’s it’s better to get away from my computer and just go for a walk or sit in a café and people watch. Sometimes if you try too hard to search for inspiration your less likely to find it, you just need to let go for a bit and it will come.

Krista Eppelstun MyLookbook

You have a blog , but you also have an online magazine? Do you do this all by yourself?

Yes I do actually! I do have the occasional contributors for some articles however it’s 99% me. Being an independent magazine and essentially a small business, this is how I’ve managed to actually earn money from it. It’s taken a while to get off the ground however I’m seeing some amazing growth right now in readership so hopefully it won’t be long and I’ll be able to employ some staff and delegate to work. I also have so many more exciting ideas to add to the business so once my time is freed up from having to do all the jobs I’ll be able to focus on other areas.

Does someone help you with the technical aspects of your blog and online magazine?
I do use freelance web developers for the technical side of the magazine. I know basic HTML but that’s about as far as it goes. It really helps to have reliable technical support when you need it, I’ve been lucky to have found some really great people who I’ve been using for my different online ventures for 10 years now.

How did you get sponsors for giveaways and advertising? That seems to be the hardest part of blogging?
Basically when you have an online magazine and blog which is free for people to read, the only way you can then earn an income is from selling advertising and that is definitely the hardest part. I think if you can prove to people that you provide and excellent service and show them results then that is the key. I work closely with all of my advertisers almost as an extra marketing arm of their business. I think building a close relationship with them so that it feels like your working together is important.

Krista Eppelstun MyLookbook

Do you spend a lot of time on social media sites like twitter, facebook, lookbook.nu? How important are they to your success?
Social media is such a crucial part of building an online business now. The problem is trying to balance your time so that you spend enough time on those sites but also make sure you have enough time to get your actual work done. I think these sites are great for connecting with your readers but also such a great way to stay on top of everything that is going on in the industry. I would say I’d spend about 1 – 2 hours per day social networking.

Do you have any spare time to have a life aside from work? What do you do in your spare time?
I think that finding a good work/personal life balance is the most important aspect of truly achieving success. People spend so much time working now that their work ends up defining who they are and they don’t know how to relax. It’s even harder when your building your own business up as you have to put in so many extra hours and there never seems to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. My favourite way to relax is to read, go to the movies or exercise by walking or doing yoga.

They say fashion originates in Paris, then New York. Where does Australia rank on the global fashion scene?
There are some extremely talented people working in the fashion industry here in Australia however our population is so small (around 21 million) that you’ll only ever see a few make an impact on the world scene. If an Australian blogger has 1% of the Australian population reading their blog, that is 200,000 people, if an American person has 1% of the American population reading their blog, it’s 3 million readers for them. You may be successful here in Australia however when you compare it to other countries it’s seems like nothing.

What “Secrets” do you have for new bloggers to help them get noticed and build a successful blog?
Find your own niche. There are so many people out there now copying what other people are doing. Find something that you love then talking about it will come easily. Then make sure you are disciplined to write regularly so that readers know they can visit regularly and will find new information. I’m a strong believe that if your passionate about what your doing, others will see that passion and your chances of success will be so much higher.

Krista Eppelstun MyLookbook

What is your ultimate goal in the world of Fashion?
I love the creativity of having my own fashion magazine to inspire & help people know what to wear, what’s new and how to work new trends. My ultimate goal is to expand and grow the business so that the magazine can be even bigger and more interactive. I’m also working on a Ltd Edition print magazine which will be available twice a year and will interact with and compliment the online magazine. Details are top secret right now however it’s going to be different to anything else available and I’m extremely excited!

What are your thoughts about the quantity of new fashion bloggers on the scene. Is it good or bad for people like you?
I like to encourage anyone that is willing to give something a go. The Internet has provided a platform in which anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can actually launch their own potential business from their home at barely any cost. It certainly makes the playing field more competitive however I think that’s a good thing as it keeps you on your toes and makes you work hard to not slack off with your own business. Sometimes I feel a little upset if I notices that someone has copied something that I’ve done however at the end of the day I try to see it as a compliment and just tell myself that it’s time to move on and think of something new!

What fashion trend do you predict will be super hot this fall 2010?
We’ll here in Australia we’re about to enter into Spring actually! One of the biggest trends here is going to be printed fabrics and wearing different prints together. There’s also lots of people starting to wear grey marl in different ways. You used to only really see it for exercise pants and sweaters now we’re seeing it in dressy trousers and party dresses. Any shoe with a wooden sole as well!

If you could spend $1000 on fashion stuff right now what would you rush to get?
Ohhhhh… I recently put a ‘fantasy’ wish list on my blog and it totaled over $3000! You can actually see it here! Fantasy Wish List

At 19 years old, she has dropped her philosophy major and decided to pursue fashion as a model and journalist.

I recently joined Lookbook.nu because I noticed a lot of great talent on the site. The first day I joined, I became a fan of Rachel Lynch. She stands out as a rebel of sorts amongst the sea of wannabes. In fashion and in life there are leaders and there are followers. Rachel is a leader, she pushes the envelope with her edgy fashion photography and her poetic renderings. A former philosophy student corrupted by fashion.

Rachel Lynch- Velvet Cigarette

I chose Rachel and her personal style blog velvet cigarette because she has her own point of view. I believe this is extremely important in the fashion blogosphere. I am noticing more an more fashion bloggers are stealing their pics from the same blogs like Fashion Gone Rogue instead of creating something new or taking the extra time to discover something new. If I had to describe Rachel in two words, they would be “Something New”. She is an inspiration to Lookbook.nu stylistas and bloggers alike. Keep on Rockin Rachel.

Rachel Lynch- Velvet Cigarette

The Kind of girl you’d get a pack of cigarettes with? Please tell me more.

That slogan kind of started because the first few times I was photographed I was usually smoking. The shots were very natural and I used to dress up everyday in some strange get-up and light a cigarette, hence the title.

So you became a LookBook.nu member almost exactly 2 years ago? How have you changed since you first joined?

I guess like anyone else, I’ve grown up a lot. I used to dress much “stranger” in vintage pieces and an overload of jewelry, now I’m known for wearing bodysuits, it’s become my trademark.

Philosophy student? Really? Tell me more.

That would be ex-philosophy student, still reading Kierkegaard but currently sailing as a journalism student. I guess I just got bored studying the things of the past, I want to write about the ever-evolving world.

Rachel Lynch- Velvet Cigarette

Who takes your photos for your blog Velvet cigarette and social media sites?

I’m a model so I’ve had the privilege to work with a talented handful of photographers. Collaboration is a key part of creativity, when you combine two heads with like-minded philosophy, the result is always something note-worthy.

Who styles your shoots?
I’m usually the one styling my shoots, for some reason, I like to have control over that aspect. I like to wear what I’m comfortable in and I don’t go out of my way too much to portray something unrealistic. I dig the raw. Styling is a fantastic creative outlet and I have a good time messing around with it.

Are you a model? If not, What do you do for work?

I am a model, so my income comes from that. Not all my shoots are paid, a lot of them are simply for collaboration sake and having a good time.

You seem to put a lot of energy and effort into your photographs. Do you do it simply for artistic expression or do you plan on joining the fashion biz?

It’s a huge creative outlet for me. To be honest, it keep me sane. There are so many ideas running around in my head, I keep a sketchbook to write them all down and dream them all out. I’m a journalism major so I’m looking forward to maybe starting a magazine someday. Ideally the magazine would be about editorial photography and everyday people.

Some of your photos get pretty close to crossing the line between fashion and adult entertainment, what are your thoughts about that?

I agree. In response, I’d have to say that my sexuality is pretty natural. I’ve very comfortable with sexuality and seem to project it without thinking much. I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing.

Rachel Lynch- Velvet Cigarette

On that same note, what are your thoughts about nudity in fashion editorials?

Love nudity in fashion editorials, the human body is fascinating.

How would you describe the inspiration behind your madness? What are you trying to portray?

I’m trying to portray my mind. It tries to crawl out in every photograph and sentence. I always feel like I’m getting closer to fully expressing myself.

Are you anything like your pictures suggest? Party Girl, No cares, wanderer, Poetic vagabond? Or are you totally opposite in real life?

I am a wanderer, but also a hard worker. I run distance miles but I find it romantic. I’m dedicated to my school work but I find it fun. It’s all how you view the things in the world around you.

Rachel Lynch- Velvet Cigarette

Where do you shop for your wardrobe?

Wicker Park has some of the most fantastic thrift and vintage stores around. In addition to that I frequently buy bodysuits from American Apparel and Topshop.

I totally understand why you would love Wildfox Couture, please tell our readers why you love the Hollywood Fashion Brand.

It’s so easy going, It projects real lifestyle. I’m a huge fan of combining lifestyle and fashion.

Your Blog only contains pics of you? What do you think about the concept of Reblogging images like many fashion bloggers currently do?

I think reblogging images is an art, you have to have an eye for combining what already exists. I respect people who do that but I don’t think I’d be so good at it myself.

Your images are very Trend oriented, that’s what initially caught my eye. Floral body suits, oversized eyeglasses, daisy dukes, thigh high stockings, ankle boots and professional looking hair and makeup. Where do you get your trend information?

I read purple magazine along with a few others. Trends are pretty much internal, If you’re tuned in, then you’ll naturally place together what feels right for that time.

What advice would you give to people thinking about getting into fashion blogging?

I would say look at the world around you, open an Australian vogue and read an article in vice. Be able to admire those who already do what you want to be doing and see what works for them.

What sucks most about Fashion Blogging?

How pretentious and self-absorbed it feels.

How much time do you spend on social media sites either from your phone or computer, everyday?

I have an old phone, so nothing there. In the morning I read the newspaper, New York Times cover to cover. I’m very concerted with what’s going on in the world. I don’t usually crack open my macbook till nighttime or after I’ve lived my day. Then I’ll search around blogs, facebook, articles until I go out.

If you had a $1000, what fashion stuff would you run out and buy right now?

Hmm, maybe some Miu Miu shoes, I love how chunky and 60’s they are this season.

All I have to say is Love—-Love —–Love. what else can yo u say about the super hot clothing line WildFox Couture. The first minute I laid eyes on the brand I fell in love. Designers Emily Faulstich and Kimberly Gordon have created a brand that symbolizes girls having fun, not a care in the world and playing dress up. these designers have brought FUN back into fashion and have made it playful, silly, seductive and mouthwatering all at the same time.

If you look at their styles, one by one, they haven’t reinvented the wheel, they focus on flirty basics with catchy screen prints of hearts, fangs and skulls. What is absolutely amazing about their brand is their imagery. Their photo shoots are captivating and whimsical. They take you away to a fashion fairly tale land where Wildfox couture is Cinderella. It’s a little bit hollywood, a little bit sunset blvd, Ventura Valley and a little bit beverly Hills all wrapped in one. It’s definitely a California brand, there is no doubt about that.

Wildfox Couture

I can tell you one thing for sure, I have been a designer and Trend director for over 13 years and I rarely come across a brand that is able to separate itself so well from the rest of the fashion crowd. They have taken a step forward and have become a leader in the young contemporary fashion market. There is a definite buzz about this brand and it is obviously destined for super stardom.

Designer Emily Faulstich took some time from her crazy schedule to answer a few questions for me. All I can say is Thank you soooo much and best of luck in your Fashion Pursuits. Remember us small peeps when ya get super huge. If you ever feel like donating some Wild Fox gear, I am sure our bloggers here would love to fight over it:)

Wildfox Couture

Ok, First Question I have to ask- How-When and Where did you come up with the name Wildfox Couture?
My Mom actually came up with it! We had been trying to find a new name for what seemed like weeks and I had an entire scrapbook full of scribbles . I think I was saying something like Foxy or Wild Heart and my Mom put them together, it was brilliant!

Wildfox Couture

If you could be Famous, Rich or Admired- Which would it be and why?
I don’t know that’s a tough one! Admired would be nice, but if you’re admired youre probably well known enough to be famous. Rich would be nice too but only so I could travel the world to exotic places and throw parties for my favorite people.

How long have you been in the fashion biz?
About 4 years now!

Do you have another job besides WildFox Couture or is this Full time?
Oh this is very very full time. More than full time!

Wildfox Couture

How many hours per week do you spend working?
Even when I’m not at the office or pulling for a shoot I’m always thinking of concepts or looking for vintage clothing or brainstorming ideas. It drives my boyfriend crazy.

How did you first get started in the fashion biz?
Kim got me a job with a design house in about 2006-2007. We both left there together when we decided to start our own line.

What has been your biggest challenge running your own label?
It’s pretty challenging to try and come up with new graphics every day, but that is a part of what makes it fun. Luckily we have a great team of people who run the business side of things, so that helps Kim and me focus just on Art Direction and Concept.

Wildfox Couture

How important has Social Media been in building your brand?
Very important! We draw a lot of inspiration from blogs and fashion sites every day.

Your Fashion Photography is Amazing .It really solidifies your brand and your target customer. How did you come up with the campaign of girls lying around motels and convertible cadillacs?
Ahah! Thanks! We have a great team for the photoshoots. We work very well together and each contribute to each other’s imaginative abilities . That certain shoot was inspired by Thelma and Louise, and the idea of just taking off with your girlfriends and being on the run. We had a lot of fun at that shoot.

Wildfox Couture

Who does your fashion Photography?
Emir Eralp. He’s amazing!

Will you ever sell out like Juicy Couture did with Liz Claiborne?
Maybe !

What fashion designer inspires you most?
I love Sonia Rykiel, her runway shows are so full of energy and look like fairy tales. She seems to be less pretentious and more about having fun and expressing herself which I think is a very important attitude to maintain.

Wildfox Couture

I haven’t seen a Wildfox Couture Runway show yet, have you done any? Do you plan to?
That would be awesome, but I don’t know if it would translate to that type of exhibition, since we are such a casual brand. I can see having a show someday but we would probably figure out something crazy to do instead!

What inspires you to continue pushing your brand even when things seem like they may fail?
We never even think about “what if it fails”, that’s not really in our minds.
Not to say that it isn’t a possibility, but positive thoughts are a lot more powerful than negative thoughts. And it’s worked for us !

What advice would you give to a young designer thinking of going to fashion school?
I don’t know much about fashion school. I went to USC for fine arts and I left to start working before I graduated. I think, depending on what you want to study, University can be very important. BUT, if you are talented and motivated I don’t think necessary to go to school to be successful in the field you want to pursue.

Wildfox Couture

What do you really hate about the fashion business?
When people take it too seriously, or have an attitude about people’s outfits. Gross.
Fashion should be a way of expressing yourself and should be uninhibited. Dress the way that makes you happy. Dress like a character you want to be, or a certain time period you love.

Do you read fashion blogs? If so, what fashion blog is a MUST read for you?
Yes a lot of them! I love blogs that have a mix of fashion inspiration and beautiful photos that don’t necessarily have anything to do in fashion. A really good one is This Is Glamorous and her fashion focus A Glamorous Little Side Project.

Wildfox Couture

Who writes your fashion blog articles?
Kim does everything behind I Love Wildfox blog! My blog is a mix of fashion and other things I love. It’s called A Dirty Blonde.

What Fashion Trend do you wish would go away forever?
Bad jeans that are too tight! Rhinestoned jeans circa 2001 that I see sometimes in strip malls or airports.

Wildfox Couture

If You had an extra $1000 right now and could buy anything for your wardrobe- what would it be?
Oooo. I love YSL heels. They are so comfortable and classy. So I would buy a pair of Iconic High Heel Patent Sandals in tan.

I am granting you one wish right now- What is it?
A plane ticket to England!!!

Wildfox Couture

Talk about self promotion, Kristine Lopez with HardCouture is a girl who demands attention. I first spotted her diva style on Lookbook.nu and that lead me to her fashion blog and her clothing line sold at Etsy.com. After reviewing her various artistic abilities, I thought she would be a great person to interview and feature on our site.

Photos shown are “Jordan Rice in

HardCouture

Many bloggers encounter the same problem, how to make money as a blogger? Well, Kristine Lopez has solved that problem, blog about clothes that you make. Problem solved. If you can get some great pics posted on Lookbook.nu and get some great pics posted on your blog then girls are gonna wonder where to get those great styles. Kristine setup a great shop on Etsy which allows girls to buy what they see on her blog. Her idea was so great, that I decided to install an Etsy plugin across all of our blogs here on Fashions Blogs that allows our community to post pics of their etsy items right into their blog. Kristine took some time to answer a few questions for me and this is what she had to say.

A Southern California Girl, what do you love and hate most about SoCal?
I love the weather and the laid back lifestyle of Southern California. But
I also hate the weather, sometimes, it just gets too hot to go out and do anything!

What do you do for fun in Southern California?
Go to Disneyland, go fabric shopping in downtown LA, lay out and eat in fancy restaurants.

What bathing suit is hot this season on the beaches of Sunny Southern California?
I’ve been dying to get a black crochet one piece swimsuit.

hardcouture

I noticed you have been a Lookbook.nu user since 2008. That’s a long time. How has it changed since you first signed up?
I don’t think it has changed its look too much. But it has way more following and I see lookbook all over fashion blogs.

I see your Fashion Blog HardCouture started back in 2007. Did you start your fashion blog to promote the clothing line or Vice Versa?
Yes I started my blog to post Hardcouture photo shoots, fashion photography inspiration, events, etc.

How did you come up with the name Hardcouture, its super catchy?
“Haute Couture” is defined as exquisite, custom-made clothing. I wanted to make pieces that were one-of-a kind. I was also into hardcore music, back in the day, so I thought it would be clever to call my clothing line, “Hardcouture.” My two greatest influences: music and fashion. I still strive to put an edge and rock influence in my pieces.

Do you design and manufacture your stuff or do you buy wholesale from the Garment district?
I buy wholesale fabric from Downtown LA. Every piece from my debut collection, “Modern Gypsy,” is my own original design. I handmade all the pieces for the runway show and editorial shoots. I had a pattern maker manufacture some of my pieces, but 70% of Modern Gypsy pieces sold are made by me.

hardcouture

Do you have any other job or full time Fashionista- What I am tryin to say “ Are you making CASH MONEY Girlfriend?? Haha
I worked retail but my etsy boutique has brought in good cash. I’m a full-time fashionista until school starts again in September.

What has been the hardest part about getting noticed in a rapidly growing sea of fashion bloggers and fashion designers?
Getting companies to sponsor me would be nice. Usually fashion bloggers get sponsored by clothing companies, but I’m my own clothing business. I have to seek out fashion bloggers to help promote my line.

Did you go to school for fashion? If so where? If not, how did you figure your way through the tangled mess? Haha
I did not go to fashion design school. I took one fashion design class in high school and one sewing class in college. Hardcouture and my collection came about from my love of fashion editorials. I did my own fashion photography and simultaneously sold vintage clothing on bigcartel. Then it grew from me making handmade headpieces and jewelry to having a fashion show for my debut collection. I can’t explain how I ended up an entrepreneur at 18, but there was a lot of trial and error. I’m still learning at age 21 and I’m sticking to my vision.

Do social sites like twitter, facebook, lookbook, tumblr and bloglovin help you to sell clothes?
Lookbook has definitely brought my page views up. I just recently got a bloglovin account, it’s great for bookmarking my favorite blogs.

How much time would you estimate you spend online everyday? Either via computer or phone.
Hate to admit it but about 2-4 hours a day on my laptop. I just have too many accounts and have to keep contact with my customers, models, and friends! But if you count my blackberry use- it’s a 24/7 relationship.

hardcouture

What fashion blog, other than yours, inspires you when you get creative block?
Hautepursuit.com. I love her style and her DIY segments.

What are your thoughts about younger and younger people starting fashion blogs and posing themselves for the world to see?
It’s great to have an individual style and a personality at a young age. As long as that person has a balance of reality and vanity, it should be okay to express yourself.

What is the next fashion trend you see on the horizon?
I see a lot of futuristic jackets and space-like frames. Maybe fashion will catch up to what 1950’s and 1960’s films portrayed fashion in 2010.

What do you hate most about the fashion biz?
Everyone uses each other and that’s fine if you’re all on the same page. But I’ve learned to be pickier with who I work with. I choose to work with sincere and talented individuals.

If you had $1000 right now to spend on anything Fashion, what would you buy?
I would love to get Alexander Wang’s Diego Leopard Bag and a pair of new black wedges.

hardcouture

What advice can you give to the new generation on how to be successful as a fashion
blogger/ fashion designer in this day and age?
Be original and stick to your guns.

Who is the one fashion designer that makes your heart stop everytime you see the
new collection?
It’s always been Chanel’s Resort collection, season after season.

There are alot of Wanna Be Fashion Designers out there and many people who claim to be Fashionistas. But how many people actually follow through with their dreams, pack up and move to London? I must say, not many.

Through the sea of Fashionistas, Fashion Bloggers and Fashion Addicts in the social Media Arena, I was able to find something fresh and inspirational. The label is called <a href=http://kellylove.com">Kelly Love and the designer aptly name “Kelly Love” took some time from her hectic schedule to share her story.

We are constantly searching the web for fresh talent in this biz that shines above the rest. We happened to spot Kelly Love on Lookbook.nu with her beautiful images of innocence and glamour all wrapped in one. Her style is definitely a mature, confident and refined look that his hard to find nowadays. I originally wanted to write an article on her fashion blog, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that she is the designer of the items worn on her Lookbook page as well. Wow.

After reviewing her site, her social media links and her blog, I developed a few questions below that she so kindly answered. I am glad to have her as part of our fast growing Fashion Blogger Community

DANCE WITH ME DOLLY GIRL DRESS by Kelly Love

Are you the model and designer of Kelly Love?

Just the designer. I have managed to persuade a few friends to model for me over the years however I generally work with models from agencies. There is a great website called Model Mayhem which links people in the creative industries to build portfolios. I use this site often.

When did you decide to become a designer?
It was something that I always wanted to do however I lived in Osaka, Japan for 2 years when I finished university and did PR for a Japanese fashion designer. From this, I realized I actually wanted to do design rather than PR and it all went from there.

KISS ME IN KYOTO BODYSUIT by Kelly Love

Did you go to fashion school and what was your first job?
I went to KVB Institute of Technology in North Sydney. It was very hands on and you had to do work experience with design houses as part of your degree which was great for experience and contacts. My first job was at a retailer who looked after various brands. I was the production and graphic design assistant.

How did you end up in London if you are from Australia?
I always wanted to live in London and the fashion industry is so much bigger than Sydney. I also love to travel so having Europe on my doorstep is a huge bonus. Plus my lovely boyfriend, who I met in Australia is Scottish so London seemed like a great place for us

More and more designers are using blogs and social networks to sell their designs. Has digital media helped your brand? If so, how?
Definitely as it really gets your name out there in a way that you couldn’t do any other way. Also shopping on the internet has become such a huge phenomenon that is seems like the natural way to go for a lot of designers.

How much time per week do you spend on the internet and social sites?
Probably about an hour a day. I should try to write on my blog and tweet more often than I do. I also write for an Australian website Mecho.com and am chatting with the founders of a few blogs at the moments as I am promoting my new collection

JUMPSUIT BACK by Kelly Love

Do you sell your brand to stores as well? If so which ones?
At the moment I sell my collection on Catwalk Genius and from the showroom of Rous Island. I have just starting working with a sales agent so hopefully that list will grow quickly

How many people work with you?
It’s just me at the moment. My friends, family and boyfriend help me a lot though. I wouldn’t have achieved what I have without calling on favours from everyone. I owe a lot of people favours!

What is the most difficult part of being a fashion designer with your own label?
The business side of the things which I think many designers struggle with at first. Such a small part of having your own label is actually design. I also work full time at ASOS.COM so juggling work, a label and a social life isn’t always easy.

HELLO CHINA DOLL SHORTS 2 by Kelly Love

Has your line ever been in a runway show? If so how did it feel to see your clothes on the catwalk?
I launched my first collection Beautiful Side of Everything in the New Generation Show during Australian Fashion Week which was one of the most exciting moments of my career. I have also showed at Frock in Sydney.

What was your worst job ever? Like a fast food restaurant or janitor? Haha
I think I’ve been really lucky with my jobs as I haven’t had one that I hated. My first job was working in my friend’s dad’s restaurant. It was called Tall Paul’s. I was 14 and felt really independent going off to work on a Saturday morning and serving milk shakes.

What fashion blogs do you read for inspiration?
I really love http://stylebubble.typepad.com/ and http://lookbook.nu/ is great to see what people are wearing. A group of my friends also have a very cool blog that I love checking http://thewayumakeme.blogspot.com/

Why do you write a fashion blog?
I just love writing and it’s a way of getting my label out there and doing something that I love. It’s also nice to be able to write about other people’s blogs and labels to get some recognition for them, especially if they have helped you by doing the same.

What advice do you have to give to the new generation of fashion bloggers, fashion designers and fashionistas such as yourself?
Make sure you want to be in the industry for the right reasons. Its hard work and not always as glamous as you would think….although sometimes it is….also it’s a great idea to try and get work experience in a few places as this can really open doors.

YOU HAD ME AT HIROSHIMA DRESS by kelly love

What do you like most about your newest collection?
The collection that I have just launched is a capsule collection for AW2010 Your Heart on My Sleeve. I really love the quality of the tweeds and velvet I have used and like that a few different types of people will wear the clothes in completely different ways. The wool jumpsuit with French lace pussy bow is my favourite piece. I can’t wait for winter to come around so I can wear it.

If you had a $1000 right now to spend on any fashion item or items, what would it be?
Anything by Chloe or I would go to My Sugarland boutique in London and go crazy!

What fashion trend needs go away forever?
Fluro bright colours and jeans so low that they reveal too much of a bad thing!

Who is the one Fashion Designer you would love to meet most?
One of my favourite fashion designers is Akira Isogawa who I have actually met through doing work experience with. I would have loved to meet Coco Chanel of course!

What is a dirty secret about the fashion business that people “on the outside” should know?
That is it more often than not much friendlier than people may think!

nerdy glasses photo from Studded Hearts

As a Designer , I automatically gravitate towards new and inspiring trends when I see them. Instead of resisting new ideas, I embrace them. Many times I might not immediately recognize what the trend is, but I find myself drawn toward a certain look. It took me a little bit of time to realize what I am liking about this new style that broke on Lookbook.nu. I call it the Geek Chic.

What is the Geek Chic Trend?

Well, first and foremost the girl must have a HUGE pair of vintage eyeglasses. They can have the lenses or not. They can be pink, yellow, clear, or black dexter style. They must be exaggerated and totally antithesis of what you would consider cool. They are actually far from cool. But that is what is so appealing about this trend.

It seems that these glasses downplay the fact that these girls are posing in front a camera to display their image to the world. They make the girl appear as though she is the girl next door who really has no friends. Now that I think about it, I just had a flash of who started this trend. Taylor Swift.

taylor swift glasses

We all know there is something attractive about a dorky girl who has an undiscovered beauty. Isn’t that the whole concept behind Victorias Secret. The Office Secretary or Librarian who has a sexy little secret under that dress? That leads me to the second and equally important part of this trend.

Geeky Girls have Super Style

Just because they are wearing big glasses, doesnt mean they don’t strut their style. See the pics below of a few of the top users on Lookbook.nu. Some have more hype than others, is that because some of these girls actually look like geeks? I’ll let you decide on that one. One thing you must admit though, there is just something about a geeky girl that brings the guard down and makes her more approachable, more real! Isn’t that what this new trend is all about- Being Real??

I am willing to jump out on a limb and say this trend is gaining popularity as a backlash to all the super skinny, super perfect models that we see on the magazines and the runways. This look makes it a super important point to put style before perfection. Its an anti perfection trend of sorts. Well, I could analyze it to death since this is what I am pursuing my Doctorate degree in, Trend Analysis. So, I am gonna stop while I am ahead and let you decide for yourself. Is the Geeky Girl Finally Gaining the Attention she has deserved all along. Thanks to Fashion sites like FashionsBlogs.com and Lookbook.nu anyone can be a fashion supa star!

We are excited to announce our very first Fashion Blog Review. As I constantly search the web for up and coming fashion blogging talent, I see many types of fashion blogs. Some are extremely outdated, some are never updated, some are way tooo pink, some are way too dark. Some fashion blogs are just tooo darn serious and other blogs have too many ads.

fashion tadpole

When I look for a top fashion blog, I look for Simplicity, originality, inspiration and freshness. Norine Leverton has developed a fresh Fashion BLog called Fashion Tadpole just a few months ago. She seems to have a great eye for beautiful fashion photography and she has a unique way of keeping her content fresh. Of course she borrows many images from fellow fashion bloggers, but she has a very selective eye for choosing just the right images for her fashion blog.
We loved her fashion blog so much, we included it in MyStyleWire and have featured an image from one of her articles on our home page for one week.

Your Name: Norine Leverton

Where you live? San Diego, California

Nickname? Renie

Your Blog: Fashion Tadpole

Your Age: 18

Your Gender: Female

Your Hobbies: Blogging, Shopping, Reading, Dance

Married, Engaged, Single? Single

How did you come up with your blog name?
I was brainstorming with my mom and sister and somehow we came up with Fashion Tadpole. I also liked the idea that Tadpoles are in the beginning stage of their lives and that they evolve. I sort of felt like a young tadpole entering the fashion world with the start of my blog and I thought it was a great metaphor.

Do you have a full time job aside from being a fashion blogger?
I just landed a summer job at Nordstrom after doing an internship there for a year.

What kind of Computer do you use?
I use a Presario Laptop.

What kind of phone do you have?
I have a black Rant however I plan on upgrading to a Blackberry ASAP.

What inspired you to get started as a fashion blogger?
I started discovering different fashion blogs while surfing the web and I would save them under my favorites. As my interest in fashion began to grow I found myself checking these blogs daily and I always admired their creativity and eye for what was current and new. My admiration for these blogs really inspired me to take a chance and start my own blog.

How long have you been blogging?
I started blogging in November 2009.

Do you make money as a fashion blogger?
I’ve received a few goodies from people I’ve advertised for.

How many hours per week do you spend blogging?
It really depends how much free time I have during the week with school work. I definitely spend more time blogging on my weekends.

Have you been invited to any special fashion industry events because you have a fashion blog?
I have received a few invites from pr companies in New York however I live all the way in California.

Who are your favorite fashion bloggers?
I love Knightcat, Fashion Toast, Le Fashion, Jak&Jil, Studded Hearts, and Sarahdanslenoir.

Who is your favorite fashion designer? Why?
I have so many. I love Proenza Schouler, Giambattista Valli, Marni, Alexander Wang, Missoni, Chloe, and Chanel. I really love how each designer has their own true aesthetic and when you see one of their pieces you know it was made by them. The signature pieces are what really grab my attention.

How do you promote your fashion blog?
I leave my link in various comments I write on other blogs. I think a lot of people have randomly stumbled upon my blog through the links I sprinkle around the blogosphere.

What do you think about the growth and popularity of fashion blogging?
I think it’s great. It’s amazing that young fashion lovers can put in their input and be heard. I also think it’s awesome that there is a new perspective that young people can look to for fashion news, inspiration, and advice besides magazine. Magazines are great because they are tangible but I feel like bloggers have taken on a more relatable approach to fashion.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?
I would love to be a stylist or an editor for a fashion magazine. I also really enjoy writing.

What is the biggest Fashion trend for Summer 2010?
I think it would have to be the return of the clog.

Who is your favorite celebrity?
It’s a tie between Mary Kate Olsen and Nicole Richie.

If you won a $1000 shopping spree what would you buy?
I would buy a pair of Louboutins or the Alexander Wang Rocco bag.

Describe your fashion blog in 25 words or less:
A compilation of fashion imagery that serve as my daily inspiration along with tidbits of words to my readers.

Describe your personal style:
I try not to subscribe to one style. I mix and match between a combination of bohemian, glamour, rocker, and grunge.

IF you were the fashion police, what laws would you make?
No Crocs or Fanny Packs.
